Audi wins Le Mans endurance race with R18 e-tron quattro
In northern France lies the city of Le Mans famous for hosting the world’s oldest active endurance car race. Teams are challenged with balancing the speed of their car and its ability to run the 24 hour long course. The car with the most laps or distance after 24 hours wins the race. Teams are made up of one car and several drivers who take turns racing the car that cannot break down or undergo any mechanical damage. Since the first race 90 years ago in 1923, there have been numerous winners among teams, drivers, and manufacturers. Porsche has the most overall manufacturer wins since 1923 with 16, but the last decade has been dominated by their sister manufacturer Audi. The Joest Racing team sponsored by Audi recently celebrated their 12th victory at Le Mans, an incredible accomplishment since their debut in 1999. Of the 15 races Audi has participated in, they’ve taken the prize for 12 of them, an astonishing 80%.
With 245,000 spectators on hand in Le Mans this year, Joest Racing was able to pull off the victory with the Audi R18 e-Tron Quattro. Designated as car number ‘2’ at the beginning of the race, the Audi R18 made only 34 pit stops taking up 47 minutes and 14 seconds. With a tank lasting 2 laps less than its rival car made by Toyota, the Audi R18 hybrid race car still managed to win with its outstanding lap time and engine performance. They have also managed to lower their full consumption over the past few years while increasing their overall speed. Joest Racing and Audi won this race in diverse weather with the help of the new digital inside mirror and advance LED headlights. Audi and Joest Racing have claimed their position as the Le Mans 24 hour race powerhouse through continuous innovation and expertise. This trend is likely to continue unless someone else can outsmart and outperform Audi, which is proving to be quite the feat!
While you may not be able to test drive the R18 e-Tron Quattro at your nearest Audi dealer… you can however see what they have to offer in a slightly more street legal model. There are plenty of endurance and performance driven Audi’s to check out at http://www.audisilverspring.com
