If you haven’t been tuned in with the new super cars coming out in the next year, the 2014 Porsche 918 Spyder is going to steal your undivided attention. This hybrid 887 horsepower engine can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds with a top speed of 211 mph comfortably. Running off a combination of gas and electricity, its 4.6L V8 engine is smooth as molasses. The Spyder’s lightweight but protective body is made of advanced carbon fiber providing great stability and speed. Although the Spyder is a new member in the Porsche lineup, it has similar Porsche trademark characteristics and was built to be the successor to the Carrera GT. The sloped nose and sleek roofline that tapers down to the rear make the Spyder look similar to the rest of its Porsche family. The unique two piece Targa top grazing the roof allows the driver to cruise in the open air.
The 918 Spyder’s engine is strapped in behind the seats fitted by light weight titanium connecting rods. The car performs in 5 different driving modes. The default “E-Power” mode allows you to drive for 15 miles purely on electric power before the gas is required, leading to “Hybrid” mode. This mode is a fairly even distribution of gas and electricity combined, similar to the hybrids on the road today. With more speed and horse power, the “Sport Hybrid” mode turns on using more gas than electricity for maximum performance. The final two modes are “Race Hybrid” and “Hot-Lap” which use even more gas but is supported by electricity for major speed bursts leading to a total of 940 lb-ft of torque. This street legal beast is completely changing the game when it comes to fuel and energy output. Keep your eyes and ears open for this trend setting machine to be released later this year at a price point estimated around $850,000.
